Here’s a little context revealing the thoughts of demons when Jesus comes on the scene.
“And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.” And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters.” Matthew 8:28-32 ESV
“What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”
Even they, the demons, know Jesus wasn’t just any man, but the Son of God. This reminds me James 2:19, “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!”
They asked, “Have you come to torment us before the time”.
Demons know there is a set appointed time when they will enter an eternal suffering. And they also know the authority of Jesus, and it shows. It only takes a word, in this case “Go“, for them to flee into a herd of pigs. And they didn’t go unwillingly, they requested permission to go into those pigs.
Truth: Jesus isn’t just another man, He is the Lord.
