Asking God for “good” things.

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭7‬-‭8‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Do you believe this truth? Let’s get a bit more context.

“Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭9‬-‭11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

So in context we see this is true when we ask for GOOD things. What are some good things according to God? Consider the fruits of the Spirit. (see Galatians 5:22). But it doesn’t stop here, there are many good things from God’s perspective that we can be asking and seeking for. In this journey we are encouraged by Jesus to keep knocking. Keep knocking in faith focusing on things eternal, his will, and Jesus says, “it will be opened to you”. This can make for a very exciting prayerful journey as you walk with the Lord.

Based on verse 7, it sounds like God is more inclined to give you the good thing you ask for than you are inclined to give good gifts to your children. Verse 11 says, “…how much more will your Father give good things…” In Verse 7 Jesus says, “ask and it will be given to you.”

What good things do you think God desires for you?
