5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5)
Review and Application:
Is it God’s desire for his people to walk with meekness?
What is meekness, and do I walk in it?
I believe the answer to the first is an obvious yes. God’s not about to tell you you’ll be blessed for something he doesn’t want you to be. Keyword “be”. This isn’t taken from a checklist of things to do. It’s better to approach this as something to become and continue growing in.
So what does it mean to be meek?
To walk in meekness is to walk mildly and humbly before the Lord with gentleness toward others. The Greek word “praus” and “praotés” describes meekness as a fruit of the Holy Spirit, never something to be accomplished by our flesh. It is never to be misunderstood for weakness but exercising strength God gives, under His control.

Are you one who hesitates in asking God for the gift of meekness? Are you concerned with being steam-rolled by others? I get it. I have my own share of pride that contends with my Spirit, tempting me to be more self-reliant. But isn’t it better to rely on God’s power over our own? If given the freewill of choice to enter a conflict with God’s power and strength, or our own power and strength, which do we prefer? I believe God will let us fight our battles alone if that’s what we desire. Contemplate the times throughout the Bible when people stopped fighting the battle, letting go, and letting God determine the outcome. Peter wasn’t fighting for his own authority when locked up in a jail cell. The walls came down. Blind Paul was no longer fighting as he allowed Ananias to pray for him. The scales fell from his eyes. Was there ever a time in your life when you surrendered a situation to the will of God and he responded? Blessed are the meek!
May God help me walk in meekness because I’d rather it be him in the drivers seat. God simply drives better and is always faithful in getting us to where we need to go. I’d rather his power, according to his will, be the influencer in the various situations I face. My power is very limited, his power – limitless!
