Where is your treasure?

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭21‬ ‭ESV‬‬

As I was meditating on this verse I began to write down some questions. These are not questions to lead myself, or anyone, into works righteousness or self condemnation.  These are just questions to do a little self examination of the heart. Where is my treasure?

It is truly Christ who is the author and finisher of our faith. As we focus on Christ, the answers to these questions have a way of working themselves out. We do have choices we can make to better position ourselves for the work only God can do.

  • What do I want most in life?
  • How often do I think of things eternal?
  • Where do I spend my time?
  • How much of my day is dedicated to spending alone time with God?
  • How much of my time is spent getting to know God through his word?
  • How much of my day is dedicated to serving God? Am I intentional?
  • How often do I share Christ with others?
  • What do I share with others?

Here’s some context:

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭19‬-‭24‬ ‭ESV‬‬

In context a distinction is made between earthly desires and living eternally. I can focus on the here and now, or I can focus on the eternal. My goal isn’t bigger house, bigger cars but making the most of my time here for the eternal. The things I do here according to his will continue forward.

Final Thoughts (for now)

From an earthly perspective if I knew in one week’s time I was going to go live in a mansion on some beautiful island with all the things I need provided, would I be concerned with what kind of things I had this week? Or would I be more concerned about the people who would come with me?

Same analogy, but what if it was a year? Would you live any different? Now bring it to the reality that we are quickly approaching moving date where we will be led to our eternal home with God in Heaven – a Paradise unmatched by any place we can find on earth, with no death or expiration date. Could be today! Could be next year. We don’t know the day, but the truth is, the day is imminent.

Is your treasure here, or there? Is Christ the most important one we live for?

Truth: our treasure, as Christians, is eternal.

Do you have any thoughts, please feel free to comment. Thanks
