Yesterday, I was driving back home with my daughter after taking an evening hike up Pusch Ridge. It’s about dusk. On the way back I ended up stopping at a gas station to fill up…well partially fill up. Anyways, as I youeee around the bay of pumps to position my car on the right side I park and see this guy walking up to my car. What’s this guy want? He looks a bit stressed and motions he wants to talk. I roll down my window. “Didn’t you hear me?”, he says. Bewildered I replied, “huh?”. He goes on, “I was yellin at you – you don’t have your lights on”. I said oh, no, I’m sorry, thanks for letting me know. It’s pretty quiet in here, I didn’t hear you”. His continence changed and he now looked relaxed and at peace. He was even agreeable about the cabin of the car blocking out the sound.
Why do people drive without their lights on? Well in my case, I simply forgot to switch them on and the road was pretty well lit…so I didn’t notice. My bad.
Have you ever met people just for a quick moment, and then poof, their back on their course and your back on yours? We all have a story out there. I would have liked to know his. All I know of him is he drives a little white car, friendly, wears a Nirvana shirt and wants me to keep my lights on.
Perhaps it was just a single serving encounter with someone doing life. I think I got that from that old movie, Fight Club. He called a man on a plane a single serving friend. He ended up not being a single serving friend, crazy movie. Been many years since I watched but from what I remember, it’s not a kid friendly movie. Guy needed rescue, just like some of us.
Anyhow, when you’re driving through life and it begins to get a little dark, be sure you have your lights on. In fact it’s better just to keep em on.
